False Hero Items and Scrolls
Ink, Knowledge, shards, and the Equipment menu — not a loot treadmill.
False Hero is not an ARPG with forty ring slots. Torchlight Games said so on the store page: skill and atmosphere, not gear grinding. The demo still has a bag, and the bag still confuses people because Scrolls and Clothing equip in the Equipment menu, not by “using” them like a potion. This page is the inventory lesson. Pair it with the loadout planner for buttons and the Combat Arts page for what those buttons fire.
Knowledge Points and ink
Killing enemies grants Knowledge Points. They upgrade Combat Arts. A 1 July demo patch let you upgrade in the tutorial area so the first points are not stranded. Playthroughs add the death tax: when you die, the mask is damaged and you lose half of your Knowledge Points. Rest at a Bloodspring before a fog you cannot read. Farming a plaza for points and then donating them to Ignorance is how the scholar stays a husk.
Scraps of ink — broken-glass-vial flavour in item text — are the other upgrade reagent. Some captures say upgrades want different kinds of ink plus Knowledge. If the upgrade menu shows a wrong ink number the first time you open it on mouse and keyboard, that was a real bug; v26.7.1 fixed it. Update the demo before you assume you are poor.
You cannot print Insight by repeating the same enemy. You also should not treat Knowledge as infinite. The demo checklist is a better farm than a scholar corridor.
Combat Scrolls
Scrolls are loadout modifiers, not extra arts. An old book “used to transcribe styles of combat” is the pickup language. Collect additional tomes to equip multiple scrolls at once. They live in Equipment.
Names the demo has actually shown:
- Scroll of Marshall Flow (sometimes misread as “Martini” in noisy captures). Effect described in-game: performing a Combat Art directly after another deals increased damage. That is the tutorial’s chain rule with a sticker on it. If you already mix Book Throw into Spectral Blade, this scroll pays you for obedience.
- Scroll of Discipline. Demo patch notes for v26.8.15 say it no longer reduces damage dealt. So it used to have a tax. If a June video tells you Discipline makes you weak, that video is old. Update, then read the card again.
The July progress post said all Combat Scrolls were implemented for the full game. The demo is a subset. Do not invent a legendary scroll because a menu has empty slots.
Clothing and capes
Fashion is real and still not DPS. Cerulean Cape got an animation pass (“less stiff”). Equip from Equipment. New-item exclamation marks can be disabled in later patches if the UI is screaming. Horizontal section tabs replaced folder buttons in v26.8.15 so you spend less time hunting a cloak you already own.
If a cape looks like armour, it is still a cape. The tier list does not rank cloth.
Mask shards
Some runs find a mask shard. The associated text in playthroughs: break the shard to gain infinite Focus for a while. That is a panic button for a boss you already understand, not a substitute for the purple bar. Use it on Ignorance only if the stagger lesson is already in your hands. Using it to ignore Focus forever is how you learn nothing for 22 September.
Shards are consumable in spirit even if the UI calls them items. Do not save them for a secret third demo boss that does not exist.
What death deletes, what it does not
- Deletes: a chunk of unspent Knowledge, your position, your patience.
- Keeps: unlocked Combat Arts, spent upgrades, clothing, scrolls already equipped.
- Insight already spent on an art stays spent. Extra Insight on a finished enemy type does not drop.
Bloodsprings write the checkpoint. A blinking mask icon is the save. An item popup can still trap you on the spring if you rest like a maniac — that bug was patched; close the popup anyway.
When the bag is sorted, go steal a kit. Items in False Hero exist to make Combat Arts louder, not to replace them. If you are still looking for a +12 spear, you opened the wrong soulslike. Open the builds page and put a poke on a button.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for the Steam demo and the 22 Sep 2026 launch.
Where do I equip scrolls in False Hero?
In the Equipment menu. A demo patch added inventory text because people tried to use them from the bag like consumables.
Do I lose Combat Arts on death?
No. You lose half of unspent Knowledge Points and the mask is described as damaged. Unlocked arts stay unlocked.
Is clothing just cosmetic?
In the public demo, yes. Cerulean Cape notes are animation, not damage. Equip it because you like it.
